Iran to launch genetic database next year

TEHRAN, Feb. 27 (MNA) – The head of Iranian Legal Medicine Organization has said forensic medicine has helped give just verdicts.

Dr. Ahmad Shojaei who was addressing the opening ceremony of fourth International Congress of Iran’s Legal Medicine on Wednesday held in Imam Khomeini conference hall of Imam Khomeini hospital, told the audience that the Organization had engaged in ‘useful’ and ‘good’ activities.

“Establishment of genetic identity database has been emphasized upon as a priority in the fifth Development Plan and we hope that by beginning of the next year (March 21 2014) it would be operative officially,” he said.

He assessed the role of legal medicine in identifying the criminals and victims of accidents as very crucial. “When in an accident 40 people burn, there would be no sign to identify these victims, and this is legal medicine which successfully identifies victims within a week and delivers them to the bereaved families,” he cited as legal medicine’s services in accidents.

“Or even in the worst of crimes, when a child girl was raped and killed, legal medicine helps the rapist drawing upon the fingerprints left,” he said.
