Iran dismisses espionage charges against citizen in Baku

TEHRAN, Oct. 13 (MNA) – The Iranian Embassy in Baku has dismissed as baseless the espionage charges against an Iranian citizen in Azerbaijan.

Azeri media reported on Friday that Baku Court on Grave Crimes had sentenced an Iranian citizen to 15 years in prison on charges of espionage.

Mohammad Ayatollai, the head of the press section at the Iranian Embassy in Baku, said such claims are intended to spread Iranophobia in some countries.

He also lamented the fact that the accusation went public and expressed hope that the Azeri Appeals Court would reverse the indictment.

Baku Court on Grave Crimes ought to hold such hearings with the participation of a legal lawyer and a representative from the Iranian Embassy, Ayatollai stated.

The Islamic Republic of Iran will seriously purse the issue, he added.
