Senior CPC official reiterates China’s opposition to Iran sanctions

TEHRAN, Sept. 28 (MNA) – China is opposed to sanctions against Iran, said Li Changchun, a senior official of the Communist Party of China (CPC) in a meeting with President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad here on Tuesday.

China believes that Iran’s nuclear issue should be resolved through negotiation and is opposed to imposing sanctions and applying pressure on Tehran, Changchun said.

"China resolutely opposes the unilateral sanctions against Iran," he asserted.

“The Chinese government always considers the Iranian nation its close friend and has always adopted the policy of cooperation with Iran,” he added.

The Iranian president, for his part, said the two countries should smartly seize the current opportunity to expand cooperation in various areas.

“Iran, as an ally of China, will stay on Chinese side forever, and the capitalist and hegemonic powers’ pressures will not force Iran into shifting its principled policy,” Ahmadinejad emphasized.

Ahmadinejad also proposed that the two countries’ trade ties reach 100 billion dollars within five years.

Li Changchun arrived in Tehran on Tuesday for an official goodwill visit to Iran.

Li, a member of the Standing Committee of the CPC Central Committee Political Bureau, conveyed sincere greetings and the best wishes to the Iranian people in a written speech issued upon his arrival at the airport, Xinhua reported.

Iran is an ancient civilized country with a long history which has created the splendid Persian civilization and made important contribution to the development and progress of human civilization, he said.

Exchanges between China and Iran began more than 2,000 years ago, and the ancient Silk Road witnessed the continuation and development of friendship between the two countries, Li stated.

“China values the traditional friendship between the two sides, and during my stay here I will meet and hold talks with Iranian leaders, exchange our ideas on boosting bilateral relations, discuss new ways to promote political mutual trust and deepen mutually beneficial cooperation, and promote bilateral exchanges and cooperation in political, economic and cultural aspects to gain new achievements,” he added.
