Resilient Iran bids farewell to volleyball championship

MILAN, Italy, Sept. 28 (MNA) -- Iran volleyball team narrowly lost to three-time world champion Italy on early Tuesday and failed to advance to the next stage of the 2010 FIVB Men’s World Championship.

In a match held at the Mediolanum Forum with many Iranian fans cheering, the Persian lost to Italy 3-2 (25-21, 25-10, 21-25, 26-28, 15-13) in Pool A of the event.

“Our main goal is to win every single match and my players are always training properly;
therefore, I am proud that we managed to win, although it was not one of our best matches. I would like to congratulate, in particular, Lasko, Travica, Vermiglio and Sala that gave an important contribution to the result of the match,” Italy coach Andrea Anastasi said.
Japan beat Egypt 3-2 in another match in Group A. Italy, Japan and Egypt all qualified for the next stage and just Iran was omitted from the pool.
“Despite not qualifying for the second round, we will definitely not give up and immediately start training for the Asian Games that will take place in about a month,” Iran coach Hossein Madani said.
