'Zionists preventing Obama from rehabilitating image of U.S.'

TEHRAN, Sept. 21 (MNA) -- Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad says U.S. President Barack Obama cannot rehabilitate the image of the United States in the world due to the Zionists’ interference.

Obama could take serious measures in this regard, but the Zionists’ meddling in U.S. affairs has prevented him from doing so, Ahmadinejad told a gathering of Muslim scholars in New York late on Monday.

During the meeting, the Iranian president also commented on the September 11, 2001 attacks against the U.S., saying the hegemonistic powers are taking revenge on the Muslims rather than the terrorists.

About 3000 people were killed in the 9/11 attacks, but in the war the U.S. began in Afghanistan afterwards under the pretext of fighting terrorism, over 110,000 have been killed so far, he noted.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Ahmadinejad stated that Christians would not be held responsible for the incident in which a Quran was burned in the United States.

Iran working for world peace

The Iranian president also held talks with Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou in New York on Monday, ahead of the UN General Assembly session.

Ahmadinejad told Papandreou that Iran is making efforts to help establish lasting peace and security in the world.

Commenting on the Palestine issue, the Iranian president stated that it is time for the U.S. government and certain other Western countries to revise their stances toward Palestine.

Papandreou described Iran’s role in the international arena as “constructive” and “significant”.

The dispute over Iran’s nuclear program must be resolved through diplomatic channels, the Greek prime minister added.
