Prosecutor dismisses report about release of American national

TEHRAN, Sept. 11 (MNA) – Tehran prosecutor general dismissed a report about the release of an American national, Sarah Shourd, who was arrested in July 2009 along with two other Americans while entered the Iranian territory illegally.

Any decision about the three American nationals will be dependent on the completion of all judicial proceedings, Jafari Doltaabadi announced on Saturday.

On Thursday, the director of local media at the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance announced Shourd would be released on Saturday, September 11, as a gesture of clemency to mark the end of the fasting month of Ramadan.

Shourd, 32, along with Shane Bauer, 28, and Joshua Fattal, 28, were arrested on July 31, 2009 by Iranian border guards as they entered Iran’s territory from Iraq’s Kurdistan region.

The three have been charged of espionage.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast said on Thursday President Ahmadinejad is personally pursuing the release of the American woman.

“Given that Eid al-Fitr is upon us, it was decided that this lady be released soon to rejoin with her family,” Mehmanparast told Press TV.
