Iran welcomes parliamentary election in Afghanistan

KABUL, Sept. 8 (MNA) – Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki has reaffirmed Tehran’s support for parliamentary elections in Afghanistan, hoping it would promote democracy in the neighboring country.

Mottaki arrived in Kabul late on Tuesday and met with Afghan President Hamid Karzai, the press office of the Afghan president reported on Wednesday.

Afghanistan’s parliamentary polls will be held on September 18.

Mottaki also expressed hope that Afghanistan’s next parliament would help promote democracy and political stability in the war-ravaged country, IRNA reported.

Karzai, for his part, thanked the Islamic Republic for its help in the reconstruction of his country.

This is Mottaki’s second visit to Kabul in the current Iranian calendar year. He paid a visit to Afghanistan on July 20 to attend an international conference on Afghanistan in Kabul.
