Westerners aim to foment discord in Lebanon

TEHRAN, May 31 (MNA) -- A member of the Hezbollah Political Bureau has said that Western countries are fomenting discord among Lebanese groups.

“The Lebanese nation and many of the nation’s political elites are completely aware of these issues and know the policies behind the Westerners’ plots and projects. Definitely, their policy in Lebanon is (meant to) foment discord among different ethnic groups,” Galeb Abu Zainab told the Mehr News Agency on Sunday.

Abu Zainab pointed to the recent report in Der Spiegel which claimed that Hezbollah was behind the murder of former Lebanese prime minister Rafik Hariri, and said, “It seems that the magazine is pursuing two objectives in making these false accusations: first, creating turmoil and chaos, and downplaying (the significance of) the arrest of Israeli mercenaries in Lebanon; and second, trying to create a rift among the people of Lebanon.”

Germany’s Der Spiegel news magazine recently claimed that the UN commission probing the Hariri murder had new evidence that Hezbollah “planned and executed” the Beirut car bombing on February 14, 2005 that killed Hariri, a Sunni Muslim, and 22 other people.

Abu Zainab added, “Despite all these efforts, the Israeli plot to foment discord in Lebanon through Spiegel magazine was foiled.”
