Iraqi premier in Tehran on unofficial visit

TEHRAN, May 30 (MNA) -- Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri Al-Maliki arrived here on Saturday to visit top Iraqi political leader Abdul Aziz al-Hakim who is hospitalized in Tehran.

Al-Hakim is under treatment for his lung cancer after he gave up a 30-year smoking habit in 2008.

 

He is the leader of the Islamic Supreme Council of Iraq which is the largest political party in the Iraqi Council of Representatives.

 

Iran’s Foreign Minister, Manouchehr Mottaki, who was also present in the hospital, called for unity within the United Iraqi Alliance and between all Iraqi factions.

 

The United Iraqi Alliance led by Hakim is a Shia coalition which grabbed most votes in the Iraqi elections of January 2005 and December 2005.
