Iran upbeat over security and political progress in Iraq

TEHRAN, May 28 (MNA) – Majlis speaker Ali Larijani said on Wednesday that Iran is upbeat over growing security and political developments in its neighbor Iraq.

The parliamentary speaker also said Iranians like to see Iraqis live in peace and take steps toward economic development of their country.

 

“Iran wishes a secure and calm Iraq along with economic prosperity,” Larijani said in a meeting with Saleh al-Fayadh, the chairman of Iraq-Iran parliamentary friendship committee.

 

The speaker pointed to cultural and religious affinities between the two nations of Iraq and Iraq, saying Iran has spared no effort to help Iraqis in recent years.

 

Larijani also said parliaments play an important role in increasing relations between the two neighbors in different areas.

 

“(Iran’s) Islamic Consultative Assembly is willing to share its experiences with Iraq’s Majlis representatives in different areas,” the top lawmaker remarked, a suggestion welcomed by the Iraqi lawmaker.

 

He also expressed happiness over growing trade exchanges since the fall of the Saddam regime and said there is a great potential for joint work in energy sector especially oil and gas.

 

Al-Fayadh also said his country greatly values ties with Tehran. “Iraq is proud of its excellent ties with Iran.”

 

Thanking Iran for its support to Iraq in hard times, he said, “The Islamic Republic played an important role in stabilizing Iraq.”

 

He also said, “Iraq’s parliament will never bow to pressure by foreigners.”
