TEHRAN, May 26 (MNA) -- There is about 1.2 million addicts in the country, and 60,000 of them are women, ISNA reported.

Rapid Situation Assessment (RSA) of Drug Abuse conducted in Iran showed that women comprise 5% to 6% of the country’s total addiction rate.

“Drug abuse has more devastating effect on women than men,” Head of the center Hassan Rafiei said, referring to great number of mental disorders caused by the drug consumption in female addicts.

Rafiei described stress and depression as the main disorders caused by addiction in women.

“Female addiction in the Islamic Republic is in low rate compared with industrial countries, but the rate should be increased,” Rafiei said, putting stress on the importance of women’s position in Islam and Iranian culture.

Head of the RSA of 2007 also lamented taboos against women’s addiction, and said “women rarely seek treatment for themselves; the grounds should be prepared for women to seek to achieve equitable treatment at the drug rehabilitation centers.”
