Alarming rise in addicted women’s pregnancy rate

TEHRAN, May 26 (MNA) – Head of Tehran Lolagar Hospital here on Tuesday warned of increase in number of children born in addicted families.

“There is an alarming rise in pregnancy rate of addicted women in the country,” Fariba Heidari-Kohan lamented.

referred to the negative effects addiction poses on mom’s and fetus’s health, and said children of women who smoke during pregnancy are predisposed to be addicted and show sign of addiction at young age.

Recent studies showed that fetal exposure to tobacco may have a significant impact on early initiation of tobacco use in children, Heidari-Kohen explained.

“On average, 2 to 3 addicted women are taken to delivery room in Lolagar hospital per week.” Most of them, Heidari-Kohen added, are addicted to dangerous illegal drugs including crack, crystal, and glass, which have great negative effects both on mom and fetus.

She said that addicted women, due to their refusal to visit the doctor during the pregnancy, usually are not aware of diseases they may suffer from, such as AIDS.

“So, addicted moms and their fetus are at great risk of dangerous diseases,” she said, urging all government and non-government organizations to make concerted efforts to increase public knowledge about addiction and its devastating effects in a bid to reduce addicted women’s pregnancy rate.
