Iran’s defensive power provides regional security: Larijani

TEHRAN, May 25 (MNA) – Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani said here on Monday that Iran’s technologically-advanced defensive equipment are in the interests of regional security.

“If you say Iran’s missiles are a threat, we do not listen to you because these defense equipment provide the region with security,” he said at a military parade in Tehran to mark the liberation of Khorramshahr.

The top lawmaker also reaffirmed Iran’s support for Hezbollah and Hamas and strongly refuted claims by certain Western countries that Hezbollah is a terror group.

“Hezbollah is not a terrorist organization, it defends dignity… Imad Mughniyeh was not a terrorist and defended the Palestinian people,” he added.

Hezbollah commander Imad Mughniyeh was martyred in a car bombing in the Syrian capital Damascus in February 2008.

Larijani also pointed out that when the U.S. took unilateral actions by invading Iraq and Afghanistan, Iran was the only country in the region that stood against such military adventures and finally Iran’s warnings proved right.

The Majlis speaker also noted that Iran owes its dignity to soldiers who liberated Khorramshahr.

Iran liberated the southwestern port city of Khorramshahr from Iraqi occupation on May 24, 1982 during the 1980-1988 Iran–Iraq war. The Iraqis had captured the city early in the war on October 26, 1980.

“If today we build long range missiles and have developed advanced technologies such as nuclear technology… it is the result of such resistance,” he added.

He also made a reference to Israel’s recent threats against Iran, saying after Hezbollah delivered a hard blow to the Zionist regime in 2006, Israel cannot contemplate attacking Iran.

However, he said, Iran’s armed forces are carefully monitoring the situation.
