TEHRAN, May 24 (MNA) – Mayors of Toronto and Seoul have expressed readiness to travel to Tehran.

Speaking on the sidelines of the Third C40 Large Cities Climate Summit in Seoul which ran from May 18 to 20, Toronto Mayor David Miller and Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon expressed their willingness to take a trip to Tehran. 


Mayors and deputy mayors from 80 cities from 41 countries, including Tokyo, Toronto, Sydney, Jakarta and Sao Paulo attended the Korea summit.


Appropriate measures to reduce air pollution and greenhouse gas emission, and improve public transportation system were among the topics discussed at the event. 


Cities’ sustainable development, ecological management, and development of green spaces in the cities were also among the issues raised in the summit.


Iranian delegation headed by Advisor to Tehran Mayor Mohammad-Hadi Heidarzadeh gave a report on Tehran Municipality’s great achievements in reducing greenhouse gases and implementing plans for management of ecological crises.


Several meetings were held on the sidelines of the event between the Iranian delegation and mayors of Toronto, Melbourne, Addis Ababa, Dar al-Islam, and Seoul.


The Seoul mayor referred to the sisterhood relations between Tehran and Seoul, and called for further cooperation.


Tehran-Seoul friendly tree is slated to be planted on Seoul Street in Tehran and Tehran Street in Seoul respectively on the occasion of Korea and Iran national days.   


South Korean Prime Minister Han Seung Soo, former U.S. president Bill Clinton, Toronto Mayor David Miller, and Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon delivered speeches at the opening ceremony of the gathering.


At suggestion of Sâo Paulo mayor, the fourth summit will be held in Sâo Paulo, Brazil in 2011. 


C40 is a voluntary organization that consists of 40 member cities and 17 affiliate cities that aim to better deal with climate change and its consequences. About 500 delegates from 80 cities worldwide participated in the summit, sharing best practices for tackling climate change and offering help to cope with environmental hazards.
