720,000 Iranians suffer from schizophrenia

TEHRAN, May 23 (MNA) -- Secretary of Iranian Psychiatric Association here on Saturday announced, “A number of 720,000 Iranians are afflicted with schizophrenia.”

Parviz Mazaheri warned of increasing rate of the disease among those aged between 16 and 25, and stressed, “The disease can be cured if it is diagnosed in its early stages.”

“The disease affects one percent of every society in the world,” the secretary lamented, describing delusions, hallucinations, or disorganized speech and thinking with significant social or occupational dysfunction as the most common manifestations of the mental disorder.

According to Mazaheri, genetic and environmental factors play a major role in schizophrenia.
