Abstaining from voting benefits no one: Rafsanjani

TEHRAN, May 22 (MNA) -- Expediency Council Chairman Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani says that abstaining from voting in the upcoming presidential election would not benefit any Iranian.

In a sermon at Friday prayers in Tehran, he also urged all candidates and Islamic Republic of Iran Broadcasting to abide by the law.

“Some counter-revolutionaries have always boycotted elections… but it is unfortunate when those who are loyal to the revolution and like it, due to some grievances, do not participate in elections,” he added.

He said all of the country’s factions and institutions agree that all people should participate in national elections.

When people strongly support an administration, its members are able to perform their duties with great determination, the EC chairman noted.

With the current presidential candidates, “All persuasions have… a candidate to vote for,” Rafsanjani added.

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, Mohsen Rezaii, Mahdi Karroubi, and Mir-Hossein Mousavi are the four presidential candidates whose credentials were approved by the Guardian Council.

Rafsanjani also said that all government bodies must abide by the law in order to gain the people’s trust for the June 12 presidential election.

It is possible that there are some faults in the law, but all candidates and their supporters should act within the law, he advised.

The EC chairman also urged IRIB personnel to perform their duties “fairly and without partiality” during the presidential campaign so citizens will be reassured that there will be no bias and trust will be fostered.
