Influential figures should not support a particular candidate

TEHRAN, May 20 (MNA) – Majlis Speaker Ali Larijani stated that influential figures should refrain from supporting any particular candidate in the presidential election.

“I do not consider it expedient for the Majlis speaker and influential figures and institutions to introduce candidates,” he told the Mehr News Agency on Wednesday.

However, he added, “Everyone, even the Majlis speaker, can take part in the election as an Iranian and cast a vote. They can also announce their vote. However, we should consider whether this is correct or not.”

Commenting on the principlist faction’s delay in supporting a particular candidate, Larijani pointed out that the faction may hold a meeting soon and discuss the issue.

The Majlis speaker stated that the candidates are from different political groupings and have different views which make the election competitive.

“With such an arrangement, I think we can approach the point made by the Supreme Leader that the most important issue in the election is the people’s widespread participation,” he said.
