TEHRAN, May 20 (MNA) -- Shahram Nazeri gave his first performance based on Ferdowsi’s Shahnameh in Paris last week.

Nazeri accompanied by his son Hafez and Azerbaijan’s great singer Alim Qasimov presented their program at the Salle Pleyel hall in Paris on May 16.

“For years, I intended to work on Shahnameh but did not dare do so, since it required extensive research and a carefully designed program. In addition, no such works on performing Shahnameh were conducted in the past century which made it even harder,” Nazeri told MNA on Tuesday after arriving back home.

“I decided to take the first step in this great hall and I am happy I did as it gave me the necessary confidence to continue my work,” he added.

Nazeri also pointed to the fact that traditional Iranian music mainly contains lyrics, saying, “On the whole, our musicians have not worked on epic works like Shahnameh or Attar’s Mantiq at-Tayr (Conference of the Birds), and since there is no model as yet for this, has been a challenging task.”

He later remarked that working on such a large project requires the public sector’s support, adding, “performing the great epics requires studying all aspects like changing the melodies of old musical instruments and even changing the manner of reciting and singing the poetry. I personally worked on this project for almost two decades.”

Nazeri continued that they did not have any prior joint programs with Alim Qasimov, saying, “We were supposed to give a joint performance on maqami music, but Qasimov arrived the night before the concert which did not allow sufficient time to rehearse. However, we both hope to give a joint concert in the near future.”

Hafez Nazeri, the son of Shahram, also introduced and played his new instrument “Hafez” at the Paris concert.
