More women die of heart diseases than men

TEHRAN, May 19 (MNA) -- Death rate from heart diseases among women aged over 60 is higher than men at the same age, the secretary of Iranian Arteriosclerosis Society said here on Monday.

Mohammad-Reza Mohammad-Hassani said that totally more Iranian men suffer from heart and vascular diseases but more women die of heart diseases.

 

Heart diseases occur in much the same rate among those over the age of 60, Mohammad-Hassani explained, describing menopause as the main factor in increasing risk of coronary diseases in women.

 

“Heart and vascular diseases are the first most common cause of death in Iran,” the secretary said, adding it “causes more than 300 thousands deaths in the country per year.”    

 

According to the Heath Ministry, heart and vascular diseases accounted for 46% of the country’s deaths in 1384 (March 2003- March 2004) which occurred mainly among those below 70.

 

He said the average age of heart attack was about 68.
