TEHRAN, May 17 (MNA) – “Islam paid special attention to women and children; they are greatly praised in the Islamic law”, the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) said in a statement issued on the occasion of the International Day of Families.

OIC joined with the International Community in observing May 15, 2009 as the International Day of Families to reflect role of women and children in today’s society.

On the theme of "Mothers and Families: Challenges in a Changing World", the day is to be held in a bid to highlight the importance of motherhood as the cornerstone of family. This is also in consonance with the strong and cherished tradition of the family values in Islam.

Following is the message of OIC’s Secretary General Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu on the occasion of the International Day of Families:

"In presenting a complete code of life for its followers, Islam accords primacy to the rights of women and children even in times of wars or political unrest.

The OIC's ongoing work in the area of the rights of women and children is inspired by the Islamic tradition and the mankind’s common aspiration of transforming this planet into a peaceful abode for future generations.

Let us utilize the unique opportunity afforded by this auspicious occasion, in paying tribute to the mothers of today. The unprecedented development witnessed by the mankind in the march of civilization could not have been possible without their sterling contribution in raising a generation of able bodies and healthy minds.

This day must also be marked by expressing a common resolve on the part of international community to strive towards improving the lot of the daughters of today who would form future mothers."

The OIC assures the international community of its support as an active and credible partner in this endeavor, the message concluded.
