Drug convicts account for 50% of prisoners in Iran

SARI, May 16 (MNA) -- Head of state Prison Organization Ali-Akbar Yasaqi on Saturday said that drug-related convicted criminals comprise 50% of the prisons’ population in Iran.

Yasaqi referred to organization’s methadone treatment programs and called the plan the best and the most appropriate measure to decrease addicts’ tendency to drug abuse.


Methadone treatment programs offered to addicts under the state Prison Organization plan devised to cut recidivism among drug offenders.


According to Yasaqi, the plan was firstly implemented in Tehran in cooperation with Tehran Municipality, and the Law Enforcement Forces.


The programs are seen as an important step towards reducing the country’s addiction rate, Yasaqi added, describing Iran as a pioneer in implementing the plan.
