7 foreign banks await permission to open Iranian branches

TEHRAN, May 14 (MNA) -- Seven foreign banks have applied to open branches in Iran, Central Bank of Iran Governor Mahmoud Bahmani said here on Wednesday.

“Seven foreign banks have submitted their applications to the Central Bank, and if they adjust to our conditions, we will not have any problem in granting permission to them,” he told reporters in Tehran.

Of the 40 Iranian applicants that had submitted requests to open banks, only six possess the necessary qualifications, he said.

Commenting on the rumors about his resignation, he said such reports are meant to tarnish the government’s image ahead of the upcoming presidential election.

“The central bank is an influential element of the country’s economy. Such false reports are only meant to undermine economic stability,” he said.
