Esteghlal out of ACL

TEHRAN, May 5 (MNA) -- Iran’s Esteghlal football team failed to advance to the Asian Champions League (ACL) next round after a home tie against Al-Ittihad at the Azadi Stadium.

Esteghlal held to a 1-1 draw against the two-time Asian champions Al-Ittihad in Group C of ACL.

Hicham Aboucherouane gave the visitors a lead in the 80th minute with a long-range shot which was deflected by Esteghlal defender Hadi Shakouri.

Ali Alizadeh’s header equalized the match but it was not enough for Esteghlal and the team was eliminated from ACL.  The Iranian representative needed a victory to boost its chance to book a berth in the next stage but failed to beat the powerhouse team in front of approximately 20,000 spectators.

Esteghlal lies fourth in the group behind Al-Ittihad which will likely qualify for the next round as the first team. Umm Salal of Qatar and the UAE’s Al-Jazira are the second and third teams in the group respectively.
