Envoy denies talks between Iran and Britain over Iraq

TEHRAN, May 5 (MNA) – Iran’s ambassador to Baghdad has dismissed reports that Tehran and London are negotiating over security issues in Iraq, the London-based Asharq Alawsat newspaper reported.

“Iran’s dialogue with Britain is not true especially if we consider this point that the security of Iraq is an issue which is only related to Iraqis and not Iranians,” Hasan Kazemi Qomi told the newspaper in an interview published on Tuesday.

The ambassador said support for Iraq to improve its security situation does not need an intermediary.

“Currently, Iran is not doing any negotiations with Britain…as such an issue is out of the authority of Iran or even Britain.”

A British government spokesman had recently claimed that his country is negotiating with Iran over its nuclear program and the Iraq security.

He had said Britain is currently in direct contact with Iran’s embassy in Baghdad.
