Saberi verdict may change: prosecutor general

TABRIZ, Iran, May 2 (MNA) – Iran’s prosecutor general said on Saturday that the appeals court may change the verdict on Iranian-U.S. journalist Roxana Saberi.

Saberi has been sentenced to eight years in jail on espionage charges.

“Roxana Saberi’s verdict has been issued by the court and the there is a likelihood of change in the appeals court,” Qorban-Ali Dori Najaf-Abadi said in Tabriz.

He went on to say if there is a demand for amnesty the Supreme Leader should give the order because the courts are independent.

Under Iran's judicial system only the supreme leader can pardon convicted offenders, except in murder cases.

Dori Najaf-Abadi dismissed international outcry over Saberi’s health, saying, “Ms. Roxana Saberi is quite well and her case is proceeding in a legal procedure.”
