TEHRAN, May 2 (MNA) -- The Iranian drama “About Elly” by Asghar Farhadi won top prize at the Tribeca Film Festival which was held from April 22 to May 1 in Manhattan.

 

In its selection of “About Elly” as the Best Narrative Feature, the jury said it was “unanimous in our passion for this seamless piece of ensemble filmmaking”.

 

“The universality of the characters and themes, and the directors riveting grasp of this story make ‘About Elly’ a film that collapses barriers and deepens our understanding of the world we share,” they said.

 

The film, which won a Silver Bear for the best director for the film at the Berlinale 2009, is about a group of college friends who reunite for a weekend trip to the Caspian Sea.

 

Marshall Curry’s documentary “Racing Dreams” from the United States took the Best Documentary Feature at the festival.

 

Ciaran Hinds won Best Actor for his performance as a haunted widower in playwright Conor McPherson’s “The Eclipse.” Best Actress went to Zoe Kazan in “The Exploding Girl,” Bradley Rust Gray’s character study of a college student home in Brooklyn for the summer.

 

Rune Denstad Langlo won Best New Narrative Filmmaker Award for “North,” and Ian Olds won Best New Documentary Filmmaker for “Fixer: The Taking of Ajmal Naqshbandi.”

 

“About Elly” was also the closure movie at the Open Doek Film Festival, which was held from April 24 to May 5 in Belgium.
