TEHRAN, July 22 (MNA) – The Islamic Republic of Iran Railways Company (IRC) will sign a contract next week with a domestic company for the production of a national locomotive, the managing director of the IRC said here on Tuesday.

“This contract will be signed between Iran Railways Company and Iran Heavy Diesel Engine MFG. Co. (DESA), which is a subsidiary of Iran’s Ministry of Industries and Mines,” Hassan Ziari said.

He also put the contract value at some $10.9 million.

According to the contract, DESA will manufacture the locomotive parts in three phases by 25%, 55%, and 100%, respectively.

“Currently, only 25 percent of locomotive parts are being built inside the country,” Ziari noted while stating that this contract is considered as a great leap towards self-sufficiency in this field.
