Iranian students finish 5th in Intl. Mathematical Olympiad

TEHRAN, July 21 (MNA) -- Iranian students ranked fifth in the 49th International Mathematical Olympiad, which is being held in Madrid, Spain, from July 10 to July 22.

Iranian six-member team won one gold and five silver medals in the competition.   

 

Kasra Ahmadi bagged gold and Milad Bakhshizadeh, Nima Hamidi, Mohammad Jahangoshahi, Amir Sepehri, and Mohammadmahdi Yazdi gained silver medals.   

 

Iranian students last year took the twelfth place.

 

The team will return Tehran tomorrow. 

 

A total number of 535 students from 104 countries participated in this scientific competition.

 

China, Russia and the U.S. finished in top three in the event.

 

The International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) is the World Championship Mathematics Competition for High School students and is held annually in a different country. The first IMO was held in 1959 in Romania with seven countries participating.

 

It has gradually expanded to over ninety countries from five continents.
