No talk of negotiations with 5+1 at Majlis committee: MP

TEHRAN, July 1 (MNA) – Majlis Energy Committee chairman said on Tuesday that there has been no talk of holding negotiations with 5+1 group at the committee.

The response followed media reports that the Energy Committee held talks about starting talks with the 5+1 group (five permanent members of the Security Council and Germany) about the 5+1 proposed package after Gholamreza Aqazadeh, the director of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, attended the committee meeting on Monday.

“In the Energy Committee meeting there was no discussion about accepting the proposed package,” Hamid-Reza Katouzian told the Mehr News Agency.

Katouzian said Aqazadeh gave some explanations about the duties of the organization, nuclear technology and enrichment but there were no talks about accepting or holding dialogue about the package.

“The representatives asked some questions about the 5+1 package and Aqazadeh stated that more studies should be done about the package as the package that presented by Iran is also going to be studied (by the 5+1 group),” Katouzian declared.

Some MPs, who are members of the Energy Committee, in interviews with a news agency quoted Aqazadeh as saying that Iran has accepted the package and that Tehran is prepared to start talks with the group.

“My understanding (of the talks) was not this news, and the released news is an interpretation of persons who did interviews with media.”

EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana on June 14 put forward an updated package of incentives on behalf of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council and Germany aimed at ending the West’s prolonged standoff with the Islamic Republic.

Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki said in an interview on Sunday that Iran is studying the package with full care.
