TEHRAN, Sept. 23 (MNA) -- Iranian artist Afshin Pirhashemi and German artist Gerhard Richter received best work awards at the 2nd Beijing Art Biennial, which is currently underway at the Chinese National Art Museum.

China’s minister of culture along with other personalities from the Chinese art scene attended the biennial’s opening ceremony on September 20.

The 30-day event, the largest of its kind in China, features over 700 artworks, mainly paintings and sculptures, by over 400 artists from 67 countries and regions, and includes such big names as Anselm Kiefer and Gerhard Richter.

The Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art has sent works by Pirhashemi, Rokneddin Haerizadeh, and three other Iranian artists to China for the event.

The biennial’s jury also presented best work awards to German painter Anselm Kiefer, British sculptor Tony Cragg, Mexican painter Arturo Rivera, and two other artists.

It is a great honor for Pirhashemi to be named alongside world famous artists like Kiefer, Cragg, and Richter.

The young Iranian artist has also won awards at the 6th Tehran Painting Biennial (2003), the 2002 Peace Festival, and the 2000 Student Art Festival and has held 14 solo and 52 group exhibitions so far.
