National goalball team secures spot at World C’ships

TEHRAN, Aug. 26 (MNA) – Iranian men’s national goalball team advanced to finals of IBSA Goalball Asia/Pacific Championships in Thailand to win berth at the 2018 World Championships.

The Iranian squad thrashed Japanese rivals 4-3 in a semifinal match played at Thai-Japan Bangkok Youth Center in the Thai capital city of Bangkok on Saturday morning to become a leg in the final round.

The top two teams at the 2017 International Blind Sports Federation (IBSA) Goalball Asia/Pacific Championships will be awarded with quotas for 2018 IBSA Goalball World Championships to convene in Malmo of Sweden.

The Iranian visually-challenged sportswomen will take on their Chinese counterparts in their final showdown at the tournament on Sunday.

Persian goalball players had previously routed teams from South Korea, Kazakhstan, Thailand and Iraq.

Meanwhile, women’s national goalball team of Iran at the sportive event only managed to occupy the fifth position.

The 2017 IBSA Goalball Asia/Pacific Championships started in Bangkok, Thailand, on August 19, and will finish on August 27.

Goalball is a sport for athletes with visual impairments. It is played by two teams of three using a ball with bells inside. The object of the game is to throw the ball into the opposing team's net, while defenders attempt to block it with their bodies.
