Wheelchair tennis team runner-up at Asian Qualifiers

TEHRAN, Mar. 01 (MNA) – National wheelchair tennis team finished second at the regional qualifying event for the 2016 World Team Cup.

Asian Qualification tournament for the 2016 BNP Paribas World Team Cup took place in Colombo of Sri Lanka from February 27 to March 01 while Iran’s squad played against China in the final fixture.

In the first individual match, Iran’s Hossein Mamipour conceded a 2-love defeat against its Chinese rival and in the second encounter Reza Kujvari failed to be the winner.

Meanwhile, in double events, the Iranian outfit carried the day 2-love.

Accordingly, with the defeat against China in the finals, Iran failed to earn the single direct quota for the 2016 BNP Paribas World Team Cup to be held in Japan.

National wheelchair tennis players had previously overthrown Iraq on route to the final.

The Iranian team consisted of three athletes Hossein Mamipour, Mehdi Tayebi and Mehdi Jabbari.

Iran was awarded a wild card entry in the 2005 World Cup in Turkey.

Attended by Iran, China and Iraq, the Sri Lankan Tennis Association held the Asian qualifier while Yemen was marked the absent team in the competitions.

The prestigious World Cu will be hosted by the Japan Tennis Association (JTA) at the Ariake Colosseum in Tokyo on 23-28 May 2016.
