1mn tons of dates to be produced this year

TEHRAN, Aug. 25 (MNA) – The general director of Tropical and Subtropical Fruits Department of Agricultural Jihad Ministry has said that Iran is the world’s second biggest palm producer; estimating that more than 1 million tons of dates will be produced this year.

Reporting that the harvest in Khuzestan will continue until early October, Abolghasem Hassanpour stated that, “the country’s average date yield is 5 t/ha; however, there exist gardens which reach to a yield of 38 t/ha.”

Pointing that one million and 150 thousand tons of dates were expected to be produced this year, he continued that, “nearly 100 thousand tons of dates produced are exported and 150 thousand tons will be used by processing industries.”

Stressing the need for more export, the official said that, “we also need to encourage the people inside the country to use this product more than before because dates are healthy and organic products and fertilizers and pesticides are not used in their production.”

“Dates can absorb free radicals in the blood and reduce the risk of cancer,” added Hassanpour underlining the important role of mass media in informing people about the use and benefits of this product.

He concluded that, “Iran ranks second in the world in terms of date production and our share in the global market is nearly 24 percent.”
