Zarif urges more effective role by EU in N-talks

TEHRAN, Jan. 13 (MNA) – Iranian FM has called on European Union to consider a more effective role in reaching a nuclear deal between Iran and the six states.

Mohammad Javad Zarif made the remarks during a meeting with the newly appointed Greek Ambassador to Tehran Georgios Ayfantis.

Stressing the need for expansion of bilateral cooperation in all fields including culture and tourism, Iran’s FM said opportunities exist to ensure further ties between the two countries, stressing that both sides possess the will for actualization of their existing potentials.

Pointing to the role played by the European Union in progress of Iran’s nuclear talks, Zarif asserted that Europe can direct its efforts toward holding a more active role in reaching a final nuclear agreement.

He also pointed to the recent deadly act of terrorism in France and called upon Europe to examine the real causes for violence and extremism as a serious challenge, laying the grounds for mutual understanding by cooperation with prominent countries in the Middle East.

Submitting a copy of his credentials to Zarif, Georgios Ayfantis also welcomed further cooperation with Iran and expressed hope the two sides would promote and deepen all-out bilateral relationship.

As a member of the EU, Greece actively supports community dialogue with Iran in the areas of human rights, the Middle East issues and terrorism. Greece is following developments concerning Iran’s nuclear program, accepting the right to develop nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.
