Police seizes ‘largest cargo of smuggled drug’

SHIRAZ, Jan. 13 (MNA) – Police in southern province of Fars has discovered the greatest pack of trafficked drugs this Iranian year from the drug gangs.

The 7-ton cargo was seized when it was entering Lar in south of the province. Brig. Gen. Ahmad Ali Goudarzi told reporters on Monday that police vigil and extended intelligence activity in fighting 'smugglers of death' had ultimately yielded. “With days of intelligence colleting and necessary measures including helicopter and heavy vehicles deployment to the Fars province incoming roads, a concrete bunker was detected to carry 7 tons of opium and was seized by the police,” he told reporters.

Goudarzi added that the bunker was coming from Hormozgan province and was being escorted by 7 other cars; “the ultimate destination was Khuzestan in the west and Tehran in the north; along with the discovery, 13kg of heroin were also seized with 3 suspects detained. Altogether, 13 smugglers active in Hormozgan, Sistan and Baluchistan, Khuzestan, Fars, and Tehran provinces were detained without any death and injury tolls,” he detailed.

“Among the seized items were a heavy vehicle and 3 rifles; Fars province has seen the discovery and seizure of 32 tons of drugs mainly opium by now; which shows a 27-per cent rise compared to that in the same time last year,” said Goudarzi, “up to 3,000 minor drug dealers have been tried and sentenced in Fars province since March 2014,” he added.
