TEHRAN, Dec. 21 (MNA) – Iran has thrown down the gauntlet to Saudi Arabia in export of nitric acid, the strategic petrochemical product in world markets.

Mehr News reported that a grand strategy of Iran’s petrochemical industry was to outmatch Saudi Arabia in terms of improvements in capacity and exports of petrochemical products.

Last year, one of the most equipped petrochemical product loading decks was opened in Mahshahr port in Persian Gulf to allow decking of 45,000-ton ships in the second deck of liquid petrochemical products in Mahshahr.

The opening of the deck would increase the export capacity of Mahshahr as 2.5 million tons of petrochemical products of the second hub, and boosted the operation of first and second decks of Mahshahr under the control of operating company.

The new phase helped the export of petrochemical and polymer products from specialized decks in Persian Gulf increase 40 million tons per year as last year more than 1230 Iranian and foreign ships decked in these terminals.

These decks are capable of exporting and importing of more than 20 petrochemical, polymer, solid, or liquid products.

With diversification of production and export basket, recently, Iran had gained the capability to store and export a new strategic product; for the first time in Middle East petrochemical industry, with operation of a new project in the current year (ending March 21 2014), the conditions for industry-level production of nitric acid in Karoon Petrochemical Complex with annual capacity of 88,000 tons per year have been favorable.
