Estimates by several public television stations showed on Sunday that Merkel’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU) will win 304 out of 606 seats in the lower house of parliament.
That means her conservatives would not need any coalition partners and could form the government by themselves.
Earlier exit polls showed Merkel’s CDU needed to form a so-called grand coalition with the center-left opposition Social Democratic Party.
This comes while the anti-euro Alternative fur Deutschland (AfD) party is uncertain to enter the parliament. Exit polls show that the party cannot get past the five-percent threshold.
Boosted by the results, Merkel has promised four more good years.
“Together we will do everything in the next four years to again make them successful years for Germany,” Merkel said on Sunday.
On Saturday, during a rally in the capital Berlin, Merkel told the crowd of Christian Democrats to start gathering support from Germans again.
“I am personally appealing to the Germans: grant me a strong mandate so I can serve Germany for another four years,” said Merkel.
