According to this report, the construction of the mosque has already been started. Visel Kak, mofti in Trabzon said: “measures to open up the Hajya Sophia Masque are in order to fulfill the Islamic practices.”
He added: “the process of turning the Hajya Sophia to a place of prayer is not going to take a long time.” The Chief of Religious Affairs has already chosen the imams for the mosque.
The Hajya Sophia Church dates back to thirteen century AD, when the Trabzon was the capital city of the Empire of Trebizond.
The Turkish authorities are doing this conversion while Islam has emphasized respects of other religious specially, Christianity and its monuments for the Muslims.
