TEHRAN, Jan. 28 (MNA) – Iran has launched the first umbilical cord blood bank in collaboration with Royan Research Institute in Iraqi province of Erbil.

Royan Stem Cell Technology company has inaugurated its first overseas umbilical cord blood bank office in Erbil, Iraq on the birth anniversary of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh).

Dr Morteza Zarrabi, the head of Royan Stem Cell Technology umbilical cord blood bank told Mehr News Agency that after we signed the letter of understandingwith Iraqi official last December, and getting the proper permits, we started to work with Jyan International Hospitalin Iraq for Processing and storage the umbilical cord blood in our new facility.

“Umbilical blood sampling of Iraqi children will be carried out in cooperation with Jyan Hospital, and will be sent to Tehran for processing and preservation according to international standards,” he added.

Royan Stem Cell Technology launched the office with the intention of providing stem cell knowledge to the  neighboring Islamic countries.
