TEHRAN Feb. 27 (Mehr News Agency) –- Fuel consumption of dilapidated cars is 2 to 4 times higher than the standard ones. In addition, they contaminate 4 to 12 times higher than the usual autos, said Dawud Mirkhani Rashti, the head of Iran’s Auto-making Association.

In an interview with Mehr news agency, Dawud Mirlhani Rashti mentioned the reasons leading to the failure of the plan to discard the depreciated vehicles.

He said that low income per capita, high interest of banking facilities, which is between 20 to 28 percent and low maintenance costs involved in repairing cars are among the major factors, which have resulted in the failure of the plan.

Pointing to the fact that annually 75 percent of the numbered cars are discarded in developed countries, he said the figure is less than 10 percent in Iran.

He put the average age of the autos between 9.5 to 13 years in most countries, adding that the figure is higher than 30 years in Iran.

He stressed the owners of the dilapidated cars are mostly the ones who do not enjoy high income and their autos account for a part of their monthly income.

He said this vulnerable community could not afford the high interest rates charged by banks.

He went on to say the plan to discard the dilapidated cars should be revised to decrease the vulnerability of the owners of depreciated vehicles and reduce interest rates charged on facilities which are rendered by banks.

Emphasizing that discarding dilapidated cars demands a national will, he said that the public, the government, automakers and other relevant sectors should feel committed to the plan and cooperate closely to achieve this goal.
