TEHRAN, Aug. 9 (MNA) -- Iranian MP Zohreh Elahian has sent a letter to United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, announcing the Majlis Human Rights Committee’s readiness to help the UN revise human rights documents.

Following are excerpts of the letter, which was published on Tuesday:

Although a number of human rights agreements have been concluded and some relevant mechanisms have been developed, the double-standard approaches that a number of UN-affiliated organizations have adopted toward the violators of human rights… has led to the situation where the people in a number of countries, including Yemen, Bahrain, Libya, and Tunisia, disappointed with the support of the UN, are witnessing the abuse of their rights by their oppressive rulers.

However, certain Western countries, who are the self-proclaimed standard-bearers of human rights and claim to be committed to defending human rights without adopting double-standard approaches, have reneged on their international commitments and have remained silent about the blatant breach of the rights and freedom of the people in Yemen, Libya, Tunisia and a number of other countries and have thrown their weight behind inhumane actions which violate human rights.

Therefore, the time has come (for the UN) to revise human rights documents based on the teachings of divine religions, which strongly recommend that human rights be respected, and to fill the void of spirituality and morality in these documents.

In conclusion, I would like to wish you success and announce that the (Majlis Human Rights) Committee is interested in increasing its cooperation (with the UN) in encouraging (countries) to respect human rights and fundamental freedom of the people and revising human rights documents.
