TEHRAN, Aug. 27 (MNA) -- A group of 30 poets and cultural figures met with Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei on Wednesday evening.

Veterans along with novices attended the ceremony at leader’s residence followed by evening prayers and Iftar (a meal for breaking the daily Ramadan fast).

The leader began speaking about the ongoing poetry movement in Iran and said, “The poetry of today enjoys rich language and imagery combined with a bright outlook toward life, that is leading to the appearance of a new style.”

He next emphasized that the development of poetry provides a basis for progress in other arts and added, “Our country enjoys a rich heritage of poetry. Iran has a tremendous potential in this art, which requires intense research and much study.”

The leader also stressed that the Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance and the Art Bureau need to support poetry and the literary associations.

“Making use of poetry to narrate feelings and affection is inevitable, but it also needs to cover religious issues in addition to social topics.

“The bravery and awareness of the Iranian nation has not been well documented anywhere in history and it is the duty of art and poetry to depict this,” he added.

The leader also talked about the poems written by the youth that convey feelings of anxiety and confusion, and said that this is quite natural. However, such feelings need to be removed via strengthening their knowledge and wisdom.

The ceremony was followed by a poetry recitation presented by some of the poets in the presence of the leader.
