JAKARTA, Dec. 11 (MNA) -- At the 13th General Assembly of the Organization of Asia-Pacific News Agencies, which is being held in Jakarta, Indonesia, the Mehr News Agency was accepted on Monday as the 40th member of OANA.

Through the support of the Islamic Republic News Agency, the Mehr and Fars news agencies were admitted to the organization, making Iran the member state with the most votes.

OANA, which was established by UNESCO in December 1961, currently has 41 members from 33 countries in the Asia-Pacific region.

The purpose behind the establishment of the organization was to promote cooperation between news agencies within the region and all over the world.

“(The Asian news agencies and media) need to build solid cooperation to promote a (positive) perception of a country in Asia like Indonesia, India or Iran,” Indonesian Vice President Jusuf Kalla said in his speech at the assembly’s opening ceremony.
