TEHRAN, Aug. 07 (MNA) – Iranian junior basketball team defeated Japan 71-64 in the 2018 FIBA U18 Asian Championships.

In a Monday match held at Thailand’s Nonthaburi, Iran U18 basketball team gained a clear-cut victory against Japan. The two teams had held the final match of the previous edition of the event in Tehran where Iranians claimed the title.

Behshad Arabzadeh with 7 rebounds, 5 assists, 1 steal and 2 blocks, scored the total of 14 points, and was named the most effective player for Iran in this game.

The 25th edition of FIBA U18 Asian Championship kicked off on August 5 in Thailand and will go through August 11.

16 Asian team have participated in the event which compete in 4 groups. Iran, the defending champion, was in Group A along with Indonesia, Japan and Kazakhstan.

Iran gained three straight wins in the group stage and advanced to quarterfinals of the competition. The Iranian squad will take on its next, yet undecided opponent on Thursday.

The top four teams of the tournament will earn the ticket to 2019 FIBA U19 World Championships.
