TEHRAN, Oct. 16 (MNA) – Senior MP Boroujerdi and Special Envoy of France to Syria Franck Gellet have called for joint cooperation in restoring peace and security in the region.

Head of the Parliament’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission Alaeddin Boroujerdi met with Special Envoy of France to Syria Franck Gellet in Tehran on Monday, where the two sides exchanged views on parliamentary relations and recent developments in the region.

Boroujerdi touched upon the recent remarks made by US President Trump regarding Washington’s withdrawal from the nuclear deal, saying “if the US Congress decides on violating their commitments under the JCPOA, the Islamic Republic if Iran will have no motivation to carry on with the agreement, and the world will see that Iran’s nuclear ability is stronger than what it was before the nuclear accord.”

Boroujerdi stressed Iran’s compliance with NPT and the Iranian Leader’s strong prohibition of the use of nuclear weapons, adding “our missile program is purely based on the doctrine of deterrence and is by no means negotiable.”

Discussing the recent developments in Syria and Iraq, the Iranian senior official said “Iran strongly supports the territorial integrity of regional countries including Syria and Iraq, and believes that the only solution to settle the Syrian crisis is a political approach.”

He further called for expansion of cooperation between Iran and France in fighting terrorism, saying “regrettably, democracy is being slaughtered in our region today. Countries’ parliament members, including parliament of France, are expected to raise their voices in defense of nations’ rights.”

The French envoy, for his part, voiced his country’s readiness to expand bilateral relations with Iran, welcoming an opportunity to make better use of the two countries’ capacities and potentials.

He also expressed hope for the settlement of regional conflicts, including the Syrian crisis, adding “given Iran’s constructive role in establishing stability in the region, cooperation between Iran and France can play a highly effective role in restoring peace and security to the whole Middle East.”
