TEHRAN, Sep. 14 (MNA) – US proxy to support independence referendum of Iraqi Kurdish region, Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday declared his support for an independent Kurdish state ahead of a regional referendum in northern Iraq.

Despite of all international oppositions to Iraqi Kurdish region illegitimate plan to hold independence referendum, Netanyahu said in a statement, " Israel supports the legitimate efforts of the Kurdish people to achieve their own state,"

The controversial referendum on Kurdish regional independence slated for Sept. 25 will see residents of northern Iraq’s Kurdish region vote on whether or not to declare independence from the Iraqi state.

Baghdad, however, rejects the planned poll, saying it will adversely affect the ongoing fight against ISIL.

The Iraqi government also believes that holding the poll would violate the terms of the country's national charter.

Turkey and Iran, too, reject the planned referendum, saying the region’s stability depends on the unity of Iraq and the maintenance of its territorial integrity.

While Washington has voiced concern that the poll could serve as a “distraction” from other pressing regional issues, especially the fight against terrorism and the stabilization of post-ISIL Iraq, many experts believe those in favour of creating an Independent Kurdish state count on US support via Israel, the only regional country that has supported the creation of an independent Kurdistan in northern Iraq because the US open support to independence of kurdish region will require a major redefinition of its relationship with Baghdad and also the US will not be able to sustain its support for an independent Kurdish state without the support of some of its regional allies, especially Turkey which opposes the creation of an independent Kurdistan.
