Speaking at the opening of the 40th Period of Sessions of IFAD's Governors Council, Mr. Nwanze called to keep investing in rural areas to eradicate poverty and hunger before 2030, just as called for by the Objectives for Sustainable Development.
Mr. Nwanze, who is finishing his 2nd and last mandate on March 31, mentioned the economic factor as the cause pushing people from rural areas to leave their places to avoid dying of hunger and poverty.
The President of Mauritius, Ameenah Gurib, tackled the topic of the crisis that affects numerous African countries and stated that the Sub-Saharan Africa is the world epicenter of poverty.
He said that at present, almost two of every five African children are undernourished and one of eight women endures ponderal insufficiency, hence the urgency of a prosperous agricultural sector.
Maurizio Martina, the Minister of Agriculture of Italy, emphasized the advances of the international community in the reconsideration of its goals and targets to fight poverty and famine, and compared that today Governments are working for rural development that leads to the zero famine.
In this meeting of the Council of Governors, which will be in session until tomorrow, will choose the new president of the organization between eight candidates of Indonesia, Mexico, Italy, Morocco, Togo, Turkey, the Dominican Republic and Switzerland.
