The time is ripe to restart the peace process in Syria and re-engage all parties to the conflict, UN Special Envoy for Syria Staffan de Mistura told reporters after a UN Security Council meeting.
"So this is actually the best moment to insist that a peace process needs to be restarted but to do so we need everyone to want to talk about a political process starting with the government and everyone else," De Mistura said on Tuesday.
De Mistura explained he intends to hold all necessary preparatory meetings to ensure that when the talks start, the parties are ready to engage in the political process. The current events should be taken as a "tragic opportunity for accelerating the political process," he added.
Addressing the UN Security Council earlier, Russian Ambassador to the United Nations Vitaly Churkin said military action in eastern Aleppo had ended after the Syrian Army re-established control of the area.
