TEHRAN, Dec. 10 (MNA) – Mr. Gholam Ali Khoshroo, the Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the United Nations, met and talked with UN Secretary General-designate, Antonio Guterres, on Thursday.

The United Nations Secretary General-elect who is going to assume his position in 2017 expressed his deep gratitude for the support Iran has offered to refugees and dislocated; something that he was well aware since the time he served as the UN High Commissioner for Refugees and underlined Iran’s status as a country with excellent position and rich history of civilization, culture, and background that plays an important role at the stage of international and regional arenas.

“My main goal as the new Secretary-General is to play a contributing, nonpartisan, and positive role in solving regional and international crises to relieve, as much as it is possible, the pains and sufferings of the human beings across the globe,” underlined Mr. Guterres.

The Iranian diplomat, Mr. Khoshroo, for his part, welcomed the UN Secretary General-designate Antonio Guterres and reassured that Guterres’ impartial, sincere, and humane positions will make him successful in dealing with his international obligations.

“The root of the regional crises should be probed in the campaign for spreading violence and extremism,” articulated the Iranian diplomat, “the Islamic Republic of Iran would not spare any efforts in cooperating with the UN for spreading peace and stability in the region.”

He also stressed that the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) was the result of intensive long negotiations with the permanent members of the UN Security Council and it necessitates the cooperation, protection, and commitment of not only all the signatories of the deal but also all the member states of the UN. Then he referred to the latest anti-Iran Act of the US Congress which he held as an infringement of the all agreements, and in contrast with the commitments of the US administration and the goals of the JCPOA.

 Khoshroo called for the reaction of United Nations Secretary General-elect to demand the commitment of all of the sides of the JCPOA.   

At the end of the meeting, Mr. Antonio Guterres was officially invited by the Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Islamic Republic of Iran to the United Nations to pay an official visit to Iran.
