Iranian First Vice-President Es’hagh Jahangiri held talks with Minister of Foreign Trade and Industry of Malaysia Mustafa Muhammad Sunday evening in Tehran, where the two sides stressed banking cooperation as the most important factor in boosting Iran and Malaysia’s trade transactions.
Jahangiri referred to the recent visit of Iranian President Hassan Rouhani to Kuala Lumpur, and expressed hope that agreements reached between the two countries’ premiers would lead to expansion of economic relations.
He deemed the activation of the two countries’ private sectors a prerequisite to development of cooperation, and noted that Iranian trade and industrial companies are eager to cooperate with Malaysian corporations on various projects.
Jahangiri also attached great importance to the role of Iran-Malaysia Joint Economic Commission in expanding bilateral trade ties.
He further thanked Malaysia for its support to Iran’s accession to ASEAN’s Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia (TAC), adding “Iran and Malaysia can also have joint cooperation with third countries in Central Asia and the Persian Gulf region.”
The Malaysian minister, for his part, maintained that the aim of his visit to Tehran was to follow up on the agreements made during President Rouhani’s stay in his country.
Mustafa Muhammad highlighted the need for expanding trade transactions with Iran, saying “we need to make efforts to remove banking obstacles as soon as possible in order to increase economic transactions between the two countries.”
He also expressed hope for constructive cooperation with Iran in the fields of oil, gas, automobile manufacturing, and academic affairs.
